Oshawa FireWolves Fans at the Tribute Communities Centre, with the San Diego Seals Power Play Being Stellar

ANALYSIS – The San Diego Seals power play was sharp on Saturday as they struck early and had three of their four power play goals in the first quarter. A lot of the damage to the Oshawa FireWolves came in the first half, as they could not get good shots because of a solid Seals defence.

The San Diego Seals Power Play Was Sharp Today

The Seals were able to set the tone of the game early, never trailing at any point during the game. A big reason for that was their power play. They were 4-5 in the power play, with three of those goals happening in the first quarter.

The goals included:

The fourth power-play goal, which was the last goal scored in the game for both teams, was where Seals goaltender Chris Origlieri provided a fantastic pass to Robinson to seal the game for the Seals.

Some of these power plays came quite early on for San Diego, highlighting their ability to capitalize on Oshawa’s mistakes. It also played a factor in San Diego dominating the shots department over Oshawa.

The San Diego Seals Had More Shots on Goal

The Seals, especially early on, were piling on the shots on goal on Oshawa’s goaltender, Doug Jamieson. They outshot the FireWolves 62-47.

Often, they were able to get deep into the Oshawa’s zone and control the passing play and find the pockets of space in the middle to get a good shot opportunity to score at the Tribute Communities Centre (TCC).

In fact, Berg (15) and McIntosh (14) led both teams in terms of shots on goal. The FireWolves only had one player who was in double-digits in shots on goal, with Alex Simmons having 12 shots on goal.

Oshawa did a better job limiting the number of shots to some extent in the second half, but the damage was already done with the number of shots the Seals had in the first half.

The San Diego Seals Defence Was Solid In The First Half

The big reason why San Diego won this game was because of their stellar performance defensively in the first half.

Their ability to force the FireWolves to take shots from difficult angles and make sure they do not get close to the San Diego goaltender was a big reason why the Seals won.

  • An example was Simmons from Oshawa being forced to get a shot off from a difficult angle late in the game.
  • There were other moments in the game where Oshawa was forced to take tough shots and could not get deep into San Diego’s half of the field.

Of course, Oshawa did a better job with this in the second half of the game. However, the damage had already been done, as scoring one goal in the first two quarters of the game puts the team in a difficult position to come from behind and try to win the game.

Other Factors

As for individual players, Origlieri had a great game, making some big stops and assisting in the last goal of the game. Leclair set the tone early for the Seals, as he had one goal and five assists. This is while McIntosh was a goal-scoring machine on Saturday with five goals and one assist.

The most notable player to note, though, is Wesley Berg, who had two goals and seven assists. He was the player of the game for the San Diego Seals, and the big reason why San Diego grabbed the win on the road.

There were also some notable players who played well for Oshawa. Dyson Williams had two goals for the team, while Tye Kurtz had two goals and two assists. In addition, Colton Watkinson had three assists for his team.

They started the third quarter quite well, being able to get deep into San Diego’s zone, something they had trouble doing in the first two quarters of the game.

Emerson Clark played his first-ever game at the Tribute Communities Centre on Saturday for the FireWolves. The interesting thing about him is that he also played for the Oshawa Generals from 2009-12, who also play at the TCC.

This is what FireWolves captain, Colton Watkinson, said about the game on Saturday and about how they plan to bounce back later this month, according to Lucas Argier of the Oshawa FireWolves website:

“We got a locker room full of guys that care, that compete hard, that want to win,” said FireWolves captain Watkinson. “We have a bye week, which will allow us to rest and watch some film and then head to Ottawa to hopefully get back on track.”

The FireWolves only have one more game left this month, which will take place at the end of the month.
