ANALYSIS – Thanks to both Tye Kurtz and Alex Simmons, the Oshawa FireWolves won a close game on the road against the Calgary Roughnecks at the Scotiabank Saddledome in Calgary, Alberta. It was not just Kurtz and Simmons who performed well, as the Oshawa FireWolves goaltender, Doug Jamieson, and Oshawa’s defence also played well.
Kurtz and Simmons Played a Key Role in the Win at the Scotiabank Saddledome
Tye Kurtz and Alex Simmons Performed Quite Well
Both Tye Kurtz and Alex Simmons were able to score goals. When Oshawa was trailing, Kurtz scored one goal, and Simmons added one goal and two assists to help Oshawa get back into the game and take the lead at the end of the second quarter.
When one watches the game, one sees Kurtz find ways to score goals and be tenacious. His first goal came from behind the net, while one of the other two involved him forcing a turnover and putting the ball into the back of the net.
Also, Simmons was able to get himself in the right positions to score or assist on a goal. There was one goal where he ran deep into Calgary’s zone before getting the ball and putting it into the back of the net.
Oshawa FireWolves Were Excellent on the Powerplay
The FireWolves were perfect on the power play. They made sure, when they were on the man-advantage, they took advantage of it.
This is how Oshawa scored the first two goals of the game. The goal above showcased the second goal, where Jaxon Fridge passed the ball to Alex Simmons, who did his magic and used his speed and agility to score the tying goal in the second quarter.
This helped Oshawa score two more goals later in the second quarter, as they put themselves in the lead at the end of the second quarter. In a one-goal win for Oshawa, all these goals counted.
Even Calgary Roughnecks head coach, Josh Sanderson, admitted it, as seen below, according to the Calgary Roughnecks YouTube Account on April 5, 2026:
“Had another tough loss, one-goal game. Thought it got away from us in the second quarter.”
In addition, the FireWolves were the only team to score a penalty. While the Roughnecks scored three power-play goals, they were unable to capitalize on their fourth power play, which also played a role in Oshawa winning the game over Calgary.
Oshawa FireWolves Goaltender, Doug Jamieson, Stepped Up
The Oshawa FireWolves goaltender, Doug Jamieson, played well against the Calgary Roughnecks. His performance in the first two quarters of the game was the reason why Oshawa won the game.
In particular, he made sure the damage was minimal, making some big stops, including:
- Making a good save in a one-on-one situation against Tanner Cook.
- Stopping Brayden Mayea’s shot to end the game.
- Made some big stops, which included making a save and then Oshawa immediately scoring to tie the game.
It was not just the goaltending that stepped up; their defence was stellar as well. Some examples of this include:
- Oshawa FireWolves had some great stick defence.
- Oshawa’s defence forced Calgary to shoot from the right side and did not allow them many opportunities on the left side to score goals.
Saying that, Calgary also had some great performances. Cook played well for the Roughnecks, and Tyler Pace might have been their best player; Aden Walsh made some big saves.
Calgary is also a team that does not quit, as Roughnecks player, Eli Salama said this according to the Calgary Roughnecks YouTube Account on April 4, 2026:
It will be interesting to see how these two team’s matchup as they face each other again on Saturday.
