CANMNT Makes History as Jonathan David Scores A Hat-Trick

CANMNT Forward, Jonathan David, Celebrates Goal with Tajon Buchanan at the Vancouver Stadium

ANALYSIS – It was a dominant performance from the team from the start to the end. Yes, Qatar had the first chance early on, but after that, Canada piled the pressure on Qatar. Canada saw that Qatar was vulnerable with corners and set pieces, and Canada took advantage of that all game long.

The CANMNT Made World Cup History as Jonathan David Got A Hat-Trick

The Striker’s Partnership of Cyle Larin and Jonathan David were Perfect

This is a formation that has not been seen before in the 2026 FIFA World Cup (it has, though, been seen many times before). This is the first time in this competition that this type of formation has been implemented, where both Jonathan David and Cyle Larin started for the national team.

There were some notable instances where Larin and David worked together. Some of these examples include:

  • David’s shot was stopped, but Larin was first to the rebound and scored the first goal of the game.
  • Larin’s shot was stopped, but David was there for the rebound to make the game 3-0 late in the first half.

There was a lot of pressure on David before this game. This was mainly because he did not have his best game offensively against Bosnia and Herzegovina. To see him score a hat-trick for his nation is something he will remember forever.

This is what CANMNT head coach Jesse Marsch said about David’s performance, according to Benjamin Steiner for the Goal.com US website:

“That’s a player, that’s a striker, that’s a goal scorer. I never had any doubts in Jonny, and the one thing I said is, for us to really be successful as a team, we need Jonny driving what we do in the attacking part of the pitch,” Marsch said post-match. “He set up the first goal with the shot, then he obviously scored the hat trick, but I thought he was fantastic in general.”

It was also the first three goals he has scored in World Cup history, and was the second hat-trick of the tournament so far. Lionel Messi scored a hat-trick against Algeria. However, more significantly, David becomes the first player to score a hat-trick, representing his host nation of Canada, since England’s Geoff Hurst scored a hat-trick for England in the 1966 FIFA World Cup Final over West Germany. Tajon Buchanan and Alistair Johnston Both Played Very Well

What should be talked about is the performance of Tajon Buchanan and Alistair Johnston. They were both excellent for the national team.

Johnston delivered some great crosses and corners throughout the game. In fact, his first cross led to a goal scored by Larin.
Then there was Buchanan. Some TSN pundits thought he was the best player of the first half. Some examples of him playing well included:

  • His cross to David early in the game. While David was not able to contain the ball properly, it showcased Buchanan’s ability to deliver crosses to his teammates time and time again.
  • Buchanan almost scored late in the game as he almost got to the ball delivered by Richie Laryea.
  • Buchanan played a part in the own goal scored by Mohamed Manai. He passed the ball to Shaffelburg, whose shot was accidentally shot right back into the back of the net by Manai.

What was most impressive was Canada’s ability to generate countless scoring chances. This forced Qatar to commit reckless challenges and receive red cards. The first red card Qatar received came because of the tremendous speed of Tajon Buchanan.

Qatar Got Two Red Cards in the Game

When Qatar received the first red card, Canada was already winning 2-0. The plays included:

  • Homan Ahmed got a red card in the 33rd minute as he tackled Tajon Buchanan from behind and prevented a clear path to the goal.
  • The unfortunate tackle made by Assim Madibo on Ismaël Koné. Sadly, Koné’s leg was broken in the play, and it was a clear red card, as it was a dangerous play.

Saying that, Madibo looked visibly upset about what he did to Koné. It was unintentional. Also, CANMNT head coach Jesse Marsch talked about Madibo coming into the Canadian dressing room after the game to apologize to the Canadian men’s national soccer team.

So, Canada was playing good soccer then and would probably have won the game anyway.

However, the red cards by Qatar probably helped Canada earn a bigger victory. This is very important because Canada needed to pile up the goals to get a better goal difference than Switzerland. Having this tie-breaker would mean that Canada only needed to draw against Switzerland to finish top of the group. Switzerland defeated Bosnia and Herzegovina 4-1, so Canada needed to get as many goals as possible.

A reason why this matters to Canada is that if they win the group, they would play at Vancouver Stadium (BC Place), if Canada finishes second, they will need to play at Los Angeles Stadium (Sofi Stadium) in Inglewood, California.

The CANMNT midfielder, Koné, was named the player of the match in the Bosnia and Herzegovina match. He also played well against Qatar and is a big loss to the national team. He has fantastic speed and can get to balls to maintain possession for his team.
Koné will be greatly missed, as Marsch said this about him, according to Elias Burke and Joshua Kloke for The Athletic:

“Ismaël is such a great kid,” Marsch said after the game. “He’s so imperfect, but that’s part of why we love him. He can do things that nobody else can do, and then in the next moment, he loses concentration for a second. But he really embodies a lot of what this team is. It’s a huge loss for us.”

Nathan Saliba, who came off the bench for Koné, raised Koné’s jersey number after scoring a goal via a set-piece to make the game 4-0 in favour of Canada.

Other Factors: CANMNT’s Bench Delivered

The bench played very well, with both Saliba and Jacob Shaffelburg contributing to the team as substitutes. Shaffelburg contributed to the fifth goal, as Mohamed Manai accidentally shot Shaffelburg’s shot into the back of the net.

As for Saliba, he contributed in two ways, including:

  • A corner following a set-piece, where Saliba put the ball into the back of the net.
  • Saliba’s shot late in the game inadvertently turned into a pass, as David got to the ball and scored his hat-trick.

The midfielders also played very well with players like Koné, Buchanan, Ali Ahmed, and Stephen Eustáquio. They made the lives of their defenders and goalkeeper very easy, and it is a huge credit to them in the game against Qatar.

Overview and History Made in Vancouver

The CANMNT made history at the FIFA World Cup in many ways.

First, they earned their first-ever FIFA World Cup win in the national team’s history. Then lastly, they have the highest win goal differential in a World Cup game for any Concacaf.

The two remaining matches of Group B will be played on Wednesday. One of the two games, which will be between Switzerland and Canada, will be shown live on TSN, RDS, and Crave at 3:00 pm ET (12:00 pm PT or local time). It will be at the Vancouver Stadium (normally known as BC Place). The second game between Bosnia and Herzegovina and Qatar will also take place at 3:00 pm ET (12:00 pm PT or local time). That game will take place at Seattle Stadium (known as Lumen Field).

Note: Canada only needs a draw to advance as winners of the group, as they own the tiebreaker of goal differential with Switzerland. Canada and Switzerland have four points each, while Bosnia and Herzegovina and Qatar have one point each. If Bosnia and Herzegovina and Qatar tie, Bosnia and Herzegovina will finish above Qatar because of goal differential.
