Kaylee Hunter: The First-Ever Goal Scorer for AFC Toronto

Childhood

Hunter was born and raised in Calgary, Alberta. She played for some local clubs in Calgary, including Calgary West FC and the Calgary Blizzards FC. Hunter talked about her love for the game and when she started playing soccer (Source: Vancouver Whitecaps FC YouTube Account):

“I was three years old when I started playing soccer,” Hunter said. “I was born and raised in Calgary, and my parents were born and raised in Calgary.”

She was an active child growing up, as she also played basketball, football, volleyball, and hockey. Hunter grew up idolizing players such as Jordyn Huitema, Jessie Fleming, Neymar, and Alphonso Davies, as well as teams such as Chelsea FC, Paris St-Germain FC, FC Bayern München, and Manchester United FC (Source: Canada Soccer).

She stepped up with the Vancouver Whitecaps FC Girls Elite as she scored 15 goals in 13 appearances. In fact, it was her performance with the Whitecaps that caught the attention of AFC Toronto sporting director, Billy Wilson, who said this about Hunter (Source: AFC Toronto Website):

“Kaylee first caught our attention during last year’s League1 Inter-Provincial Championships, where she led her Vancouver side to the title. We then watched how she was able to compete in those Concacaf Champions Cup games against incredibly high-level opposition, and it was obvious that this wasn’t just another talented player.”

She would continue her strong form, with eight goals currently scored for AFC. This included scoring two goals against Ottawa Rapid FC on July 10. Hunter also played a big role in the AFC’s key 3-1 victory at York Lions Stadium against the Halifax Tides FC. Additionally, more recently, Hunter scored one of two goals in a tight 2-1 win over the Calgary Wild FC last Saturday.

Her form has been catching the attention of key people within and outside of the AFC Toronto organization. This is what AFC Toronto sporting director said about Hunter, comparing her to Olivia Smith, who recently was involved in a record-transfer fee in women’s soccer that sent her from Liverpool to Arsenal (Source: CFJC Today):

“Kaylee’s an exceptional talent,” said Wilson. “I was fortunate enough to work with Olivia Smith (a Canadian international now with England’s Liverpool) as a youth player. There are a lot of similarities. Different players, but in terms of generational talent, I think there’s a remarkable player that we have on our hands here.”

That is some high praise, but there is some truth to what Wilson has said, as Hunter is now under the CANWNT/CANXNT’s radar.

Her form has been catching the attention of even the CANWNT/CANXNT head coach, Casey Stoney, who had high praise for the teenage forward:

“I take Kaylee Hunter as an example. She wasn’t in the squad on the roster, but she trained with us all week. And just a player at 17 years old being in a pro environment, you can see what that’s doing for her. And I think what it does, is give platforms for young players. It would otherwise possibly be sitting on the other team’s benches, the opportunities to play, and that’s going to be big for us.”

Hunter’s success at the youth levels of the CANWNT/CANXNT could also make her case. With the Canada U17 team, she scored eight goals in only six games and with the Canada U20 team at the 2025 CONCACAF Women’s U-20 Championship qualification competition, she was tied for first in goals scored for the tournament along with fellow Canadians, Annabelle Chukwu, and Kierra Blundell.
